Carpenter Ants Extermination Klamath Falls

Carpenter ants are called such because they prefer to carve their nests into damaged and moist wood. For the most part, this means making nests in rotting trees, stumps, and logs. However, occasionally these pests will build their nests in homes that are made from wood, and especially if that wood has been subjected to prolonged periods of moisture.

Carpenter ants will build two different types of nests: a parent nest and subsequent satellite nests. As the parent nest matures and gets too small for the size of the ant population, the ants will begin to build satellite nests to support the growing size of the colony. It is not uncommon for there to be several satellite nests in association with the same parent nest.

How Can I Tell If I Have Carpenter Ants?
Recognizing carpenter ants by sight takes a trained professional. These ants can vary significantly in size ranging from 2mm to 20mm and can be anywhere from black, light brown and tan to orange, red, or yellow in color. One distinctive quality, and probably the most common sign that homeowners notice, is the presence of swarmers, which are ants with wings. These ants can sometimes be mistaken for termites but, are actually a sign that the parent nest has matured and the colony is preparing to build a satellite nest.
Another sign of carpenter ant infestation is the presence of wood shavings mixed with the dead bodies of other ants in piles near a carpenter ant nest. While other pests might eat the wood that they excavate, carpenter ants will just dig the wood out and leave it in piles. Sometimes, people will report hearing a rustling noise that the ants make while they are digging and moving around.

Can A Carpenter Ant Infestation Be Treated?
It is absolutely possible to treat a carpenter ant infestation by applying a chemical treatment and removing the nest or nests. However, in order to be successfully in removing a nest, you have to locate it. And, to be successful in making sure there is not a re-infestation all moist conditions that attract carpenter ants must be taken care of.
It is fairly unlikely that a carpenter ant infestation will cause major damage to the structure of your home or business, however, if the infestation is left untreated for long enough several satellite nests could be built increasing the chances for lasting damage.
