These ants can sometimes be mistaken for termites but, are actually a sign that the parent nest has matured and the colony is preparing to build a satellite nest.
Another sign of carpenter ant infestation is the presence of wood shavings mixed with the dead bodies of other ants in piles near a carpenter ant nest. While other pests might eat the wood that they excavate, carpenter ants will just dig the wood out and leave it in piles. Sometimes, people will report hearing a rustling noise that the ants make while they are digging and moving around.
