Keep Pests In The Cold This Winter

A-One Exterminators

As winter descends on Oregon, so does the wet season. Whether it’s the fast-melting snow or the fog and rain, November to March presents an especially damp time of year in the Pacific Northwest. Though the mosquitoes of the summer aren’t as rampant, winter provides tempting conditions for many other types of pests to enter your home to seek shelter from the growing damp.

Though bugs often don’t want to interact with humans, they will do what needs to be done to survive. In the winter, this can mean seeking shelter from the damp in the warmth and safety of your home.

Tips to Keeps Pests Out This Winter

Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent these types of intrusions and keep your home safe and free of insect infestations.

  1. Install Vapor Barriers, which seal your home’s foundation from the surrounding earth using plastic sheeting. This prevents the moisture from settling in your foundation or drywall and keeps the inside of your home dry.
  2. Install and maintain Belly Wrap. These protect the bottom of the home from the ground underneath using polyurethane material. The bottom area of the home can be penetrated by gas and sewer lines, which is how many pests enter the home. If your home already has a Belly Wrap, it should be properly maintained and examined annually.
  3. Inspect and rid your crawl spaces of dry rot. Small dark spaces are breeding grounds for damp conditions, and damp conditions are breeding grounds for pests. Keeping crawl spaces and basements clean and dry is vital to protecting your home from infestation.
