Springtime Cleaning Tips to Prevent Pests

A-One Exterminators

Follow These 3 Steps to Prevent Pests This Spring

Now that winter is ending and spring is right around the corner, you’ll have more opportunities to clean up and maintain your home. Spring also presents pests with an opportunity to manifest as well. If you take the initiative and use the right spring cleaning practices, you can prevent pests from becoming an issue in the first place.

Clean the Outdoors

The part of your home impacted by winter the most is your yard. The snow and rise in condensation in general will leave your yard full of deteriorating or moist wood that attracts termites, wood-boring beetles, and other bugs. Remove rotten tree stumps and keep some distance between your home and mulch. Take the time to clear and repair or replace rotted shingles, as well as clear your gutters and spouts. Also, trim your bushes and branches to prevent pests from entering your home.

Reduce Water and Moisture Indoors

The inside of your home can also contain moisture that can invite pests as well, like silverfish. When cleaning up your bathroom, pay attention to leaks or signs of leaks from your plumbing system, such as mold. Ensure that you close all sources of water, like shower heads and faucets. For the rest of your home, try a dehumidifier to reduce moisture.

Clear Kitchen Cabinets

Food attracts pests, and the cabinet and pantry systems in your kitchen provide a perfect combination to stay in there, fed and hidden. When cleaning your kitchen, inspect your cabinets and clear them from expired or unused food items. Wipe down the inside and install new shelf paper. While you’re at it, vacuum and clean the spaces between appliances and the wall and make sure to keep your fresh food tightly sealed.

With the proper spring cleaning techniques, you’ll keep your home in top shape in time for the warmer seasons, while saving yourself from future headaches due to pests.
