Spiders are one of the most common summertime pests in the United States, and the Southern Oregon area is no exceptional to this nationwide trend. While some spiders gravitate toward moist areas such as basements, others make their homes in warmer areas such as attics.

Reduce Access
Spiders tend to enter homes through windows or doors that have holes or uncovered openings. Windows with old screens or doors with a lack of weather stripping should be repaired or replaced to reduce the chances of spiders infiltrating your home this summer.
Use Natural Deterrents
Certain insects, such as ladybugs, can serve as a deterrent for spiders. If you have plants or garden beds on the side of your home, bringing ladybugs into the area can do wonders to prevent spiders from coming anywhere near your property this summer.
Eliminate Clutter
All spiders like to hide in cluttered areas, as this shields them from being found. Keeping your home and its exterior clean and organized this season can diminish the likelihood of spiders making their homes in piles of clutter around or inside your property. Be sure to clear away bundles of trash, wood chips, yard equipment and any other type of debris laying around your yard to ensure there is no clutter for spiders to make their home in.
Get a Pet
Pets are another great way to deter the infiltration of spiders. Cats are particularly good at capturing spiders and other common household pests. Cats often spend time outdoors and can act as a guard to defend your property from pests throughout the warmest months of the year. Consider adopting a cat this summer if no one in your family is allergic to feline hair.
Maintain Your Landscape Plants
As previously noted, spiders love to make their homes in cluttered spaces where they can hide. Unfortunately, numerous plants, such as bushes, trees, flowers, and shrubs are perfect hiding spots for spiders. However, keeping your landscape and plants trimmed and properly organized this season can prevent clutter and keep spiders at bay.
