With Thanksgiving officially in our rearview, there is no doubt that winter has arrived and it is time to be thinking about staying warm and cozy indoors.
Unfortunately, there are some rotten pests that like to stay warm and cozy during the winter season – inside of YOUR home.
Pests like cockroaches, mice, and spiders all start to move indoors during the winter months when the weather gets too cold outside.
These pests can be especially troublesome as roaches and mice carry dangerous diseases and some spiders can be poisonous.
Thankfully, there are some things that you can do to make sure that the cold air and the pests stay outdoors this winter:
Take a walk around the outside of your home and make sure that all cracks and holes are sealed up with expanding insulation foam. Keep in mind that a mouse can fit through a hole the size of a dime so even the smallest hole should be sealed up. Areas around utility lines and pipes into the wall should all be sealed.
Make sure that the weather stripping around your windows and doors is all in good shape. These small cracks are the perfect place for spiders and roaches to crawl inside of your home.
If you have a fireplace, keep the firewood at least 20 feet away from your home to ensure that spiders do not crawl inside of your home from the wood pile. When you go outside to grab firewood, wear gloves and keep your gloves in a place that spiders will not crawl inside looking for shelter
Keep your garage or storage areas cleaned and free of clutter. Mice like to burrow in old paper, clothing, and other materials. They will chew through a cardboard box looking for food or other materials they can sue to make a shelter.
If there are any areas of water dripping or food crumbs and scraps, make sure to clean that up right away. These conditions are invitations to pests and the pests will stay as long as there is food and water. The sooner you get those cleaned up – the better.
