During the summer months many people enjoy spending time in their yards pruning bushes, tending to gardens, and cleaning up their flowerbeds. But, seeing those little holes in the leaves of your plants can be defeating, especially when you have worked so hard to take good care of your plants. These bugs in your garden are a perfect meal for spiders, and no one wants spiders near or inside of their home.
Some spiders prefer moisture like that found in basements and crawl spaces. But, others like warm, dry areas like the upper corners of rooms and attics. In both cases, most spiders like to hide in dark areas and stay clear of humans.
Spiders will typically enter a home either through spaces around windows and doors. Windows that have screens that don’t fit properly, or that have holes in them are perfect access points for spiders. And, front doors, patio doors, and garage pedestrian doors that are hung incorrectly or, that have missing weather stripping can provide the perfect welcoming to spiders.
Some ways to keep spiders out of your home include:
- Some insects are natural deterrents for spiders. For instance, lady bugs will keep spiders clear of your home. If you have a garden that is right near your home or, flower boxes that are attached to the exterior of your home, introduce lady bugs and you will not see any spiders.
- Spiders love cluttered spaces where they can hide under and behind things and stay out of sight. They don’t typically like to be around humans and only bite when provoked or scared. If you keep your home and your yard tidy and free from piles of wood, garbage, and equipment spider will not have a place to hide.
- Pets naturally keep spiders away. Cats are especially good for catching spiders because they like to play with the crawling critters. If none of your family members are allergic to cats, consider getting one that stays outdoors and will spend the evenings hunting and catching spiders.
- As mentioned before, spiders prefer areas where they can hide, this includes bushes, shrubs, and plants. If you have landscaping that is near or right against your home, keep it tidy and trimmed so that spiders are not attracted and will not come to hide.
