Possible Bat Infestations? Look for These 5 Signs

Compared to most pests, bats aren’t as harmful and don’t bring as many health hazards. Still, their droppings can create respiratory problems in vulnerable people, and they can create damage in your home or business. Look for the following signs to detect bat infestation as soon as possible.

High-Pitched Squeaking

Bats use high-pitched squeaking and chirping to both move around in dark locations and communicate with each other. Usually, you can’t hear this noise by itself, and if it’s not very noticeable, it’s most likely a traveling bat or two. Prominent and recurring squeaking, however, is a potential sign of an infestation.

Flapping Noises

Another type of distinctive noise that indicates a bat problem. These noises initially sound like a rat infestation problem. If you hear bizarre scratching and moving around, particularly during dusk and dawn, then listen closely. Bat infestations have a flapping sound mixed in between those noises.

Bat Guano Droppings

Droppings of bat guano are a distinct sign of a bat infestation. Look for any droppings near the attic or in outside entry points, such as window sills, decks, and the roof. Piles of guano have a distinct ammonia smell, and contain a spore called histoplasmosis, which causes a lung decease that is dangerous for the most vulnerable.

Scratches in High Areas

The signs of scratches by themselves can indicate another type of pest, such as rats. However, pay close attention to scratches in higher areas, such as the attic and walls. Bats are most likely the culprit behind the damage.

Grease Marks

Another sign to look out for in higher entry places is grease marks. Bats tend to have greasy film in their coats. If you see brown or black stains near the attic, roof, or any holes in the upper areas of your building, it’s a likely sign of bats. You can clean these stains, but the area will need sterilization.

Detecting a bat infestation is crucial in preventing health risks and property damage as soon as possible. Once you see several of these signs, contact a qualified exterminator to handle the removal.
