Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. In this case, the enemies are household pests. The more you know about common pests in your region, the better you will be able to keep them out of your home for good. Here are a few simple facts about some of the most common critters that intrude homes and businesses in southern Oregon.
Bedbugs
Bedbugs are bloodsucking critters that come out at night to eat, and then retreat into tiny cracks and crevices during the day. If you wake up with red bumps or itchy welts, you may have bedbugs. You can see adult bedbugs with your naked eyes. Warmth, blood, and CO2 attract bedbugs, but having a cluttered home can offer more places to hide. Get rid of bedbugs with help from experienced exterminators.
Fleas
Pets can make fleas more common intruders in your home, but you can still get fleas even without furry friends. You may feel fleas biting you, or notice itchy bumps or irritated skin. Fleas can live in grass and sand surrounding your home in Oregon, and come inside by hitching a ride on you. If you have a pet with fur, comb it regularly and use a flea prevention solution. Vacuum carpets often to collect fleas and eggs.
Box Elder Bugs
Box elder bugs are black with six legs and red markings. These are especially common in the fall and winter because they like to congregate on the warm sides of buildings or trees. They can swarm trees, wooden posts, and wood buildings. They tend to live in cracks and crevices in walls during the winter to hide from the cold. Box elder bugs have mouthparts that can puncture the skin and cause irritation. They can also stain materials such as curtains or clothing an orange-red color from fecal matter.
