18568570_sNow that we are in the late months of the winter season, there are even more pests to be aware of. We have talked about mice, and you may have even seen in or around your home in the last couple of months.

We have talked about how to keep mosquitoes from invading your yard by keeping standing water cleaned up and dry. Mosquitoes lay eggs in even a tiny drop of water, so any standing could be a breeding ground for mosquito eggs.

But, one pest that we haven’t talked about but, is very active in the winter and late winter months is the cockroach. And, more specifically the german cockroach. This is the most common species of all cockroaches and, is most likely to be found inside of homes.

Their feces is left behind as they crawl, but then once it is dry, the dust will get kicked up into the indoor air, and then breathed into your respiratory system. Cockroaches like small, dark places with plenty of moisture and food so the kitchen in your home is perfect.

Here are some tips to keep cockroaches out of your home:

  • Keep the counters, floors, and pantry shelves clean and free from crumbs. Once cockroaches come into a home and find a source of food, they are very difficult to get rid of.
  • Vacuum your home on a regular basis, and dump the garbage regularly. While you may not see it, your carpet could have small bits of food in it that have been dropped from dishes and mouths, so it is important to vacuum the carpet regularly.
  • Pay close attention to the areas under the kitchen sinks and bathrooms. These areas are known for developing slow leaks, which provide the moisture that cockroaches need to survive. They will make the trip to the kitchen for crumbs and come back and hide under the sink where it is dark and moist.

You already have a plan for keeping mice and mosquitoes away from your home, add to the list cockroaches and you never be sorry. Cockroaches are one of those pests that are very difficult to eradicate so prevention is the best way to address them.
