What Attracts Termites to Your Home?

Spring is the beginning of termite season, particularly in Southern Oregon homes. One of the
most effective manners to prevent a termite infestation is to reduce anything that brings them in.
By identifying what elements attract these pests to your household, you can take preventative
measures and stop the possibility of termites before they create damage.

Piled Up Wood

Termites feed on materials such as firewood, lumber, paper, or any type of material related to
wood. Homeowners tend to create woodpiles against their home’s walls as a way of storing it,
which attracts termites and allows them easy access to the rest of the building. Termites also
choose decayed wood over wood in a sound state. Prevent the presence of termites by raising the
woodpiles, keeping outdoor wood away from the walls, or prioritizing throwing away decayed
wood.

Excessive Mulch

Using mulch in your garden is an effective way to maintain your garden in a healthy shape.
However, if you use excessive mulch, you can attract termites that will feed on it, and they may
reach your home if you apply the mulch too close to your home. Mulch also contains moisture,
which increases its attraction to termites. Spread mulch at least 15 inches away from the house’s
foundation.

Improper Drainage

Excess moisture and dark, damp places such as crawl spaces attract termites, as they provide the
perfect environment for termites to inhabit and reproduce. Most of the moisture in your home
originates from poor drainage systems or the lack thereof. Fixing or installing proper drainage in
your home can greatly reduce the possibility of termite infestations. Measures such as clearing
your gutters and downspouts, as well as installing concrete skirts and slopes, can reduce
moisture.

Poor Plumbing

Leaking or improper plumbing is an additional source of excess moisture in a home. Pipe and
faucet leaks introduce extra water to dark, isolated places, which can weaken the foundation and
welcome termites. Make sure that the plumbing in your house is working properly.

If you notice an infestation of termites in your residential building, do not hesitate to contact
professional exterminators to protect the structure of the building, as well as the property inside
of it.
